From their inception, yoga and chiropractic treatment came from two different places. Daniel David Palmer performed the first recorded chiropractic adjustment in 1895. Yoga began over 5,000 years ago as a type of religious movement. Both of these practices are concerned with wellness. Yoga focuses more so on the wellness of the soul. Chiropractic treatment focuses on wellness of the body. There are connections between the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895 to other forms of alternative medicine. However, Chiropractic treatment today is regarded as a viable option for medicine in general. Yoga, on the other hand, has undergone a more interesting journey. What started as a religious practice in India is now associated with yoga pants and people that shop at Whole Foods Market. Perhaps an overview of the four periods of yoga will be useful.
Pre-Classical: This is where it began. The oldest records of yoga are actually found in religious texts. There is no question that yoga was viewed as a spiritual journey. The aforementioned 5,000 years might be as much as 10,000 years according to some historians.
Classical: Without getting too in-depth, the classical period was a unification of the many different types of yoga. It was also the beginning of a more systematic form of yoga.
Post-Classical: This was a rejection of the ancient Vedas. Post-Classical was more focused on finding enlightenment through the physical body.
Modern: Yoga began to be popularized in many areas of the world. Yoga teachers are certified in a specific style of yoga. Really expensive tight pants came into fashion.
