Exercise that is right for you

As you may or may not be aware, Chiropractors do so much more that adjust the joints of the spine.  As Chiropractors, we have many years of experience in the anatomy and physiology of the human body.  In a nutshell, we understand how the body is designed to work.  This means that we understand exercise.

A recent study found that 30-45 minutes of moderate to high intensity exercise five days a week is a must for aging adults.  These exercise programs should be tailored to the patients needs and should be home based and easy to incorporate as part of everyday activities.

Lets break this down a bit more.  30-45 minutes of moderate to high intensity means some form of exercise that leaves you huffing and puffing.  Older adults who undertake regular physical activity also report less disability and better physical function regardless of their body mass.  This is really cool because it automatically creates an individualized program to the patients needs.  You pick the exercise (within reason of course) that you enjoy and go to it.  Make sure that it is pain free and get moving.  Move to the point of huffing and puffing.  If it hurts, stop and come in for an evaluation of the painful area.  If you have a heart condition, consult your heart doctor first.  This is moderate to high intensity for you and it may look nothing like the same effort of intensity as the person sitting (pedaling, rowing, tread mill-ing) next to you.  That is fine.  This is your exercise plan, not theirs.

This is great if you already own a piece of exercise equipment.  Make the time to use it.  I am a big fan of the great outdoors, but as I am sure you have noticed, it is winter outside.  That is no excuse to not get your exercise in.  It is for your own good.

Next time, I will stay on this line of thinking and get into the pros and cons of various home exercise equipment.

Until then, keep moving.
