How to Prevent Sciatica
Before we can discuss how to prevent sciatica, let’s first define what it is. WebMD gives this definition, “Sciatica refers to back pain caused by a problem with the sciatic nerve. This is a large nerve that runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. When something injures or puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, it can cause pain in the lower back that spreads to the hip, buttocks, and leg.”
Many people will experience sciatica at some point in their lifetime. Even though it can be treated without surgery most of the time, it is still a painful, tedious process to endure. Sciatica can be prevented in many cases though, just by following these tips.
Who Is The Most Susceptible?
Certain people are at higher risk of developing sciatica than others. Knowing if you fall into this group can help you prevent it from occurring, or treat it in its early stages. Women tend to be more susceptible than men, and women who work in manual labor are even more susceptible. Men who work in manual labor also have a higher risk of developing it.
Other factors that contribute to your chances of developing sciatica are: if you exercise enough, are overweight, or have a history of neck or back pain. These will all increase your chances of getting sciatica. All of these issued can be addressed to prevent developing it. You can start exercising more and eating healthier to lose weight. If you have neck or back problems you should visit the chiropractor and receive the necessary treatment to fix it.
Prevention Tips
Everyone should use these prevention tips, even those not listed above as susceptible. They are simple tips that will help prevent sciatica and improve your overall health and wellbeing.
  1. Exercise Regularly
Daily Exercise will keep your joints loose and active and will reduce the likelihood of straining or putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  2. Good Posture
Bad posture will put pressure in unwanted places and cause back and neck pain. By maintaining good posture you will reduce the likelihood of having pain and developing sciatica.
  3. Shorten Your Stride
Shortening your stride will keep you from pulling or injuring your sciatic nerve.
  4. Yoga
Yoga relaxes the body and mind. If you are actively involved in yoga you will reduce the risk of developing sciatica. Your muscles and tendons will remain loose and well stretched, causing your body to be less likely to put pressure on or strain the sciatica nerve.
